Visual Art In The 40's

Visual Art

Some of the art in the 40's was propaganda art from the government. They used it to sell bonds for the war as well change the public's opinion about the enemy and the war.
Here is a example of propaganda art:

Also a very famous painter during that time was Jackson Pollock. He was a very abstract painter. He used splashes and dropping to paint his paints, there wasn't any brush strokes. Insted of having a easel he put his canvas on the floor. Also he added foreign objects to his paintings like sand and broken glass.

Here is a example of a Pollock Painting:

1940's Music

Music in the 40's

Music in the 1940's was built around jazz styles. Many musical acts tried to reflect in their music the struggle and pain the U.S was going through. The pain that America was going through was that lots of young men were leaving to go over seas to war, leaving families, wife's, girlfriends, and children. One of the most popular jazz musicians was Dizzy Gillespie. He became an innovator in the 1940's musical jazz. He created the bebop style of jazz, that was normally fast paced. Bebop music often created irregular phrases of odd length. Charlie Parker helped Dizzy develop the style of bebop music. Many people thought bebop was unsuitable for dancing. His music styles took concepts from Latin and African influence. He was also known for playing with a bent trumpet because of it's particular unique sound. One of the major reasons why we chose Dizzy was because he started a whole new genre of jazz music styles. Also he stood out by his physical appearance, as well as his musical styles and instruments. Another popular musican in the 40's was Cab Calloway. He was so popular that people referred to him as "Hi De Ho" guy. Once he forgot the word to a song while peforming so he improvised by adding nonsense syllables.

Also art was influenced in how the economy changed, in the 30's America was going through a depression, in the 40's the economy started doing better. As well the nation is greatly effected when President FDR dies. As well after the war, is when the baby boomers started. Also in the 1940's is when communism is first introuced.
